Who counts as insured on my homeowners policy?
The definitions section decides which household members and relatives are covered, and it rarely matches who lives there.
What filed forms generally say
Most forms define the insured as the named insured plus resident relatives and certain minors in their care.
A student away at school is often included by specific wording up to a stated age.
Roommates, unmarried partners, and non-relative residents are frequently outside the definition unless added.
Why your policy can still say something else
Age limits and the treatment of non-relative residents vary by form and by state amendment.
