Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.
My car was stolen — what does the policy cover?
Theft is normally a comprehensive claim, with rules about waiting periods, personal belongings and how value is settled.
What filed auto forms generally say
Theft of the vehicle itself is generally covered under comprehensive — “other than collision” in most forms — subject to the comprehensive deductible.
Personal property inside the car is usually excluded from the auto policy; those items are typically a homeowners or renters contents question instead.
Settlement is normally on an actual cash value basis if the car is not recovered, and many forms impose a waiting period before a total-loss settlement is issued.
Why your policy can still say something else
Waiting periods, custom-equipment limits, and whether any transportation expense applies during the search differ by form and endorsement.
