PoliSays

Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.

Do I pay a deductible for a cracked windshield?

Glass is often carved out of the comprehensive deductible by endorsement — but only sometimes, and only for repair versus replacement in some forms.

What filed auto forms generally say

Windshield damage is generally a comprehensive claim, so the comprehensive deductible on the declarations page applies by default.

Many policies carry a full-glass or safety-glass endorsement that reduces or removes the deductible for glass specifically. Some versions waive it only when the glass is repaired rather than replaced.

A few states require carriers to offer zero-deductible glass coverage, which is why the same carrier's forms read differently from state to state.

Why your policy can still say something else

Whether a glass endorsement is attached, and whether it applies to repair only or to replacement too, is a per-policy fact your declarations and endorsement list decide.
