Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.

Does my policy follow me into a rental car?

Most forms extend coverage to a temporary substitute or non-owned auto, but the terms are narrower than the counter agent's pitch implies.

What filed auto forms generally say

Personal auto forms generally extend liability and, when carried, physical damage coverage to a private passenger auto you do not own while you are using it with permission.

That extension usually carries your own limits and deductible, and it typically does not include the rental company's loss-of-use or administrative fees the rental contract charges.

Business use, vehicles rented outside the United States and Canada, and trucks above a stated weight are common exclusions from that extension.

Why your policy can still say something else

Geographic limits, loss-of-use treatment and non-owned physical damage terms differ by form; a rental-vehicle endorsement can broaden them.
