Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.
Is flood or water damage to my car covered?
Comprehensive normally covers flooded vehicles — one of the places auto coverage is broader than a homeowners policy.
What filed auto forms generally say
Water damage from flooding, a storm surge or a submerged road is generally a comprehensive claim on a personal auto policy, subject to the comprehensive deductible.
Unlike homeowners forms, personal auto forms usually contain no general flood exclusion, so a car in a flooded garage and the house around it are handled under different rules.
Total-loss determinations on flooded vehicles are common because water reaching the interior or drivetrain frequently exceeds the car's value.
Why your policy can still say something else
Whether comprehensive is carried at all, the deductible, and any mold or corrosion limitations depend on the declarations and endorsements.
Clauses to look for in your own document
- Part D — Other Than Collision (Comprehensive)
- Exclusions — Wear and Tear, Mechanical Breakdown
- Limit of Liability
- Declarations — Coverages and Limits
Auto policies differ. Upload yours and Poli will show you the actual clause.
