Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.

Is hail damage to my car covered?

Hail is a comprehensive loss on most auto forms — which means it is only covered if you bought comprehensive. Here is where that shows up.

What filed auto forms generally say

Hail, flood, falling objects and animal strikes are typically comprehensive losses rather than collision losses.

Comprehensive is optional coverage on personal auto policies, so a liability-only policy generally pays nothing for hail damage to your own vehicle.

When comprehensive applies, the comprehensive deductible comes off the payment, and cosmetic-damage-only losses are still losses under most forms.

Why your policy can still say something else

Whether comprehensive is on the vehicle at all is a declarations fact, and some policies attach a cosmetic-damage or wind/hail deductible endorsement that changes the amount you pay.

Clauses to look for in your own document

  • Part D — Comprehensive Coverage
  • Declarations — Coverages by Vehicle
  • Deductible
  • Exclusions — Wear and Tear

Auto policies differ. Upload yours and Poli will show you the actual clause.
