Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.
What happens to a claim if my premium payment was late?
Coverage generally turns on whether the policy was in force at the moment of loss, and cancellation notice rules are set by state law.
What filed auto forms generally say
Filed forms generally respond to losses occurring during the policy period shown on the declarations, so a lapse at the time of the accident is the decisive fact.
Cancellation for non-payment usually requires advance written notice under state law, and the effective date on that notice — not the missed due date — normally ends coverage.
Reinstatement after a lapse is often prospective only, which is why a loss during the gap can remain uncovered even after the balance is paid.
Why your policy can still say something else
Notice periods, grace periods and reinstatement terms are governed by state amendatory endorsements more than the base form.
