Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.
What is the difference between medical payments and PIP on my auto policy?
Both pay injury costs regardless of fault, but they cover different things and are required in different states. Here are the clauses to compare.
What filed auto forms generally say
Medical payments coverage pays reasonable medical and funeral expenses for injuries from an auto accident, usually within a set time period after the accident, regardless of who was at fault.
Personal injury protection is broader in most states that use it: beyond medical expenses it can pay lost wages, replacement services and survivor benefits, again without regard to fault.
Which one your policy carries is largely a function of state law — no-fault states generally mandate PIP, while other states offer medical payments as an option.
Why your policy can still say something else
Limits, the time window for treatment, coordination with your health plan and any deductible or copay structure differ by form and by state amendatory endorsement.
