Car policy confusing? Ask Poli.

Am I covered using my personal car for work errands?

Ordinary commuting is normally fine; carrying goods or people for a fee is where filed forms push back.

What filed auto forms generally say

Personal auto forms generally cover commuting and incidental business use of your own vehicle, such as driving to a client meeting.

Public or livery conveyance — carrying persons or property for a fee — is a standard exclusion, which is what separates a work errand from delivery work.

Vehicles furnished or available for your regular use by an employer are commonly excluded from the non-owned auto extension, so a company car needs its own coverage.

Why your policy can still say something else

Business-use definitions, any commercial-use endorsement and the treatment of employer-furnished vehicles differ by form.

Clauses to look for in your own document

  • Exclusions — Public or Livery Conveyance
  • Exclusions — Vehicles Furnished for Regular Use
