What does it mean when my insurer non-renews my policy?
Non-renewal and cancellation are different clauses with different notice requirements, and the policy spells both out.
What filed forms generally say
Cancellation ends coverage during the policy term, and most forms restrict the grounds for it sharply once the policy has been in force past an initial period.
Non-renewal simply declines to offer another term, and the policy typically requires written notice a set number of days before expiration.
The notice period, and whether a reason must be stated, are usually set by a state amendatory endorsement rather than the base form.
Coverage runs through the expiration date shown on the declarations page either way, so the dates on that page are what define the gap you need to fill.
Why your policy can still say something else
Notice days and permitted grounds are state specific, and the base form's wording is frequently replaced entirely by the amendatory endorsement.
