Policy confusing? Ask Poli.

What are wind mitigation credits and are they on my policy?

In coastal states, roof and opening features can earn premium credits. They appear on the declarations page, not in the booklet.

What filed forms generally say

Wind mitigation credits reduce the windstorm portion of the premium for construction features such as roof deck attachment, roof-to-wall connections, roof geometry, secondary water resistance and opening protection.

The credits are normally documented by an inspection form filed with the insurer, and they show on the policy as a rating credit or a listed mitigation feature rather than as coverage.

Credits can lapse when an inspection expires or when a roof is replaced without the paperwork being refiled, which is a common reason a coastal premium jumps at renewal.

A credit is a price change, not a coverage change: it does not alter your hurricane deductible or what the policy pays.

Why your policy can still say something else

Which credits exist, how long an inspection lasts and how the credit is displayed are state and insurer specific.
