Does homeowners insurance cover water backing up into the basement?

Backup through a drain or sewer is usually handled by an endorsement with its own limit, not by the main water clauses.

What filed forms generally say

Most filed forms exclude water that backs up through sewers or drains, or that overflows from a sump or sump pump.

Coverage is then commonly added back by a water-backup endorsement carrying its own modest limit and sometimes its own deductible.

Water that rose from the ground outside is a third situation again, and is generally excluded as surface water or flood.

Why your policy can still say something else

Whether the endorsement is on your policy at all, and the limit it carries, are specific to your declarations page.
